A native deciduous shrub with tiny lemon-scented white flowers clusters followed by drupes of dark purple berries in late summer. An attractive landscape specimen and edible sprawling hedge. Prefers full to partial sun and moist, well-draining soil. Flowers and berries support birds, butterflies, and bees. Black Elderberries can be made into a delicious syrup.

Also known as Common Elderberry. Prune hard in Spring to maintain the best foliage and to control spreading habit.

Note: Elderberries should not be eaten raw like blueberries or raspberries; instead, they need to be either cooked or tinctured to remove any potential toxicity. Elderberries are wonderful to prepare for elderberry juice, elderberry tea, elderberry jam, ice cream, and elderberry wine.

To Grow:
To start outdoors (preferred): Direct sow outdoors in prepared soil in fall, planting ¼” deep and 10’ apart in groups of 3-4 seeds per plant. Keep soil moist.

To start indoors: Soak seeds for 24 hrs before sowing. Seeds require stratification. Warm/moist stratification for 90 days at 68 degrees. Then cold/moist treatment for 90 days at 39 degrees (Refrigerator temperature). Sow 1/4” deep in pots with 3-4 seeds each or seed trays filled with rich potting soil and place in a warm sunny area or under lights. Germination will be slow. Keep seedlings well-watered and transplant to their permanent location when several inches tall, after last frost. Seedlings typically grow 7-19” the first year. Keep well-watered and weed free.

Quantity:
(Min. 50 Seeds)

ABOUT OUR SEEDS:
• Non-GMO
• US grown
• Open-pollinated
• Untreated
• Tested regularly to ensure they meet the highest germination standards
• Include full, detailed growing instructions

All of our seeds are professionally packed in ecofriendly resealable, full color packets made from recycled content and printed with vegetable-based ink (see photos).
